Scheduling School Visits
Professor Richard Trout visits over 40 schools a year. During those visits Professor Trout tells his inspirational story about how he got started in writing and how he writes novels. His presentatoin is about 45 minutes but he can go for much longer, if needed. Forty-five minutes is the minimum. His presentations are highly acclaimed in middle schools. Grades 6-8 are the grades of interest. Richard is the author of the MacGregor Family Adventure series of novels for young adult readers.
He also likes to allow about 15 minutes for questions from the kids.
At Lawton MacArthur Middle School he was allowed to talk for 75 minutes and the kids asked questions for 30 minutes. The key to this successful visit was that the teachers had read between one and three chapters of one of Professor Trout’s novels to the kids. They also had been made available to borrow from the library for three months in advance of the visit. Teacher participation is key to a good visit.
Please read the Teacher/Librarian reference letters. You can see for yourself what these educators are saying.
Some schools are restricted in space as to how many kids can attend a Richard Trout visit in one sitting. This can be alleviated by having the presentation in the gym in lieu of a school auditorium. Auditoriums are great but if a school doesn’t have one, Professor Trout has found that placing the kids on the floor of the gym with the projection screen under the basketball goal is a great forum. Kid’s are attentive and close to the presenter and teachers are sitting at the perimeter. The only detracting factor is that some gyms allow too much light exposure for a good slide show. LIGHT CONTROL IS VERY IMPORTANT! Don’t forget the kids, too.
Professor Trout brings a flash drive or CD to run through the school’s laptop in conjunction with the school’s projector. Screen, projector, laptop, microphone and a cup of ice water is all you need to get a great program going.
Richard Trout’s fees are as follows for visits which include two presentations and lunch with the kids as well as time to autograph books. These visits may occur on Monday and Wednesday between 8:00 a.m. and 11:30 for Oklahoma City Metro schools. All other school visits take place on Fridays.

Book Sales:
Please send a flyer home with the kids telling parents about the visit of author Richard Trout and the many books he has written and are available for purchase by the kids. This can be done after the kids have been exposed to the MacGregor Family Series about two weeks before the visit. Then you will have a good estimate of the number of books you will need for the kids.
Best of Books in Edmond, Oklahoma (405-340-9202) will be happy to handle all of your book needs. However, if you prefer not to have books shipped to you, then please inform Professor Trout of books that you have PRE-SOLD and he will be happy to accommodate by bringing them the day of the visit if he is coming by auto. All book orders must be taken care of two-weeks in advance. However, if you did not get a good response, and that varies from school to school, you may also send home a flyer telling parents about the visit and the availability of books TWO days before the visit. Late sales can be taken care of the day of the visit. All books are hard-cover and sell for $15.95. If sales are to individuals and not to schools, then a sales tax is added in Oklahoma. Please verify the price from Best of Books , as well. Forgetting to send home flyers may disappoint some of your kids as well as parents who want them to read more!
Time of Day of the Presentation:
It is suggested that the time of the presentations be no earlier than 9 a.m. to allow for driving and traffic. If the visit is out of the state of Oklahoma where overnight travel is required, other times may be acceptable.
